Twenty-one applicants from 11 institutes were nominated for Prince Mahidol Award Youth
Program in 2024. Only 5 successful applicants meet the criteria of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program. The Selection Committee selected the scholarship recipients and presented to the Board of Trustee which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a President. The final decision had been made on the 1st November 2024.
Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program has been established on the 20th November 2007 according to the 2nd/2007 consensus of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation Committee. The program aims to inspire and facilitate Thai youths studied in the health fields to pursue their dedicated life for the benefit of mankind following the footsteps of HRH Prince Mahidol of Songkla. The steering committee, the working committee, and the selection committee are responsible to select the applicants who meet the criteria of the program, and present their names to the Board of Trustee which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a President, for a final decision.

Mr. Khemmawit Siriwong
Mr. Khemmawit Siriwong is a sixth-year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. He is interested in a research topic of “Novel multipurpose molecular target for diagnosing and treating breast cancer: Telomerase reverse transcriptase gene complex.”
Breast cancer is undeniably one of the leading causes of mortality in women worldwide, with over two million new cases diagnosed and hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. However, it is preventable if detected early and treated promptly. Mr. Siriwong is passionate about developing innovative diagnostic tools, screening methods, and therapies for breast cancer to reduce the disease burden on individuals and the healthcare system while improving the well-being of both Thai and global populations.

Mr. Kanathip Jongmekwamsuk
Mr. Kanathip Jongmekwamsuk is a sixth-year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. He is interested in a research topic of “ Exploring neural biomarkers of vascular risks in age-related cognitive decline through population receptive field changes using functional neuroimaging.”
Cognitive decline is a significant health issue that impacts the quality of life of patients, their families and the healthcare system, particularly in aging societies like Thailand. However, currently available tools primarily detect structural brain abnormalities, which appear after substantial damages of cognitive decline. This limitation hinders early detection of at-risk patients and delays timely prevention. Mr. Jongmekwamsuk aims to apply a novel technique for functional magnetic resonance imaging to develop early diagnostic tools and design personalized preventive strategies to individual risk profiles. This could help reduce the incidence of dementia in the future and improve the overall health of the Thai population.

Ms. Chutibhorn Charnnarong
Ms. Chutibhorn Charnnarong is a sixth-year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. She is interested in a research topic of “Adding life to years: Healthy aging through developing a comprehensive database for brain health.”
As society ages, longer life spans do not always translate to better quality of life, where additional years are often marked by illness. Thus, the goal of aging should not simply be to extend life expectancy, but to improve life quality. Brain health, defined as the state of brain functioning across cognitive, sensory, social-emotional, behavioral, and motor domains, plays a direct role in impacting the quality of life in elders and must be preserved. Preventing the decline of brain health requires an understanding various factors including clinical, biological, radiological, and digital health data from wearable devices and mobile applications. Compiling these diverse data sources into a comprehensive database is crucial for analyzing complex relationships between these factors, facilitating more effective strategies to protect and enhance brain health.

Mr. Thitipat Pattanaprateeb
Mr. Thitipat Pattanaprateeb is a sixth-year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. He is interested in a research topic of “ Kidney sentinel: Advancing clinical translation of biomarkers for early diagnosis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients through targeted metabolomic analysis.”
Half of all patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) develop it as a result of diabetic kidney disease, and these patients face lifelong challenges with kidney replacement therapy” The primary reason for poor disease outcomes lies in the delayed diagnosis of DKD. Current clinical diagnostic methods are insufficient to detect early kidney damage caused by DKD in its initial stages. Mr. Pattanaprateeb, with a strong interest in nephrology and biochemistry, has proposed a research project utilizing metabolomics technology to identify biomarkers for the early diagnosis and prognosis prediction of DKD. The ultimate goal of this study is to enable timely intervention, improve the quality of life for DKD patients, and reduce the risk of complications and the burden of lifelong treatments.

Ms. Pannaporn Kalkoljuck
Ms. Pannaporn Kalkoljuck is a sixth-year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University. She is interested in a research topic of “The exploration of molecular underpinning the placenta tissue of unexplained stillbirths: Analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data and development of therapeutic strategies.”
She is committed to contributing to preventive measures and empowering families with informed reproductive choices. Her research is about the exploration of molecular underpinning of the placenta tissue of unexplained stillbirths, which focuses on uncovering the genetic causes of stillbirth. By conducting genomic and transcriptomic analyses of the placenta, she seeks to identify genetic factors that may explain stillbirth and inform strategies for prevention. This research is not only a step toward addressing a critical gap but also a foundation for advancing genetic research in Thailand. The insights gained will enhance healthcare for Thai families while contributing to global understanding and progress in obstetrics and genetics.
