The Selection Committee selected the scholarship recipients and presented to the Board of Trustee which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a President. The final decision had been made on 31st October 2016.
Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program has been established on 20th November 2008 according to the 2nd/2008 consensus of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation Committee. The program aims to inspire and facilitate Thai youths studied in the health fields to pursue their dedicated life for the benefit of mankind following the footsteps of HRH Prince Mahidol of Songkla.
The steering committee, the working committee, and the selection committee are responsible to select the applicants who meet the criteria of the program, and present their names to the Board of Trustee which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a President, for a final decision.
The successful applicants will obtain a scholarship for research study, professional training or community development abroad or in the country with full support for 12-month overseas placement. The period of overseas placement of the scholarship recipients will be considered as a part of their three-year working period for the government of Thailand.

Mr. Chanodom Piankusol
Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University
Mr.Chanodom Piankusol is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University. He is interested in the field of pre-hospital resuscitation focusing on the implementation of Public Basic Life Support (BLS) to improve outcomes of patients with Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) in Thailand. The OHCA is one of the most common causes of death in Thailand. In order to increase the poor survival rate of OHCA in Thailand, efficient and proper bystander BLS including Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are needed. Promoting public awareness and education concerning the BLS training may increase the percentage of bystander CPR in Thailand. The public education should be included in the school curriculum, and the general population-community training programs. Currently, Thailand has no BLS training or education in schools. Other concerning issues are the shortages of AEDs, adequate registry, financial support, CPR research, and governmental public policy reinforcement. He intends to study and analyze a pre-hospital resuscitation system focusing on BLS schooling curriculum and public education, public AEDs, Emergency Medical Services, governmental public policy/Law, organizations responsible for the system, CPR registry, and monetary support. Additionally, he determines to create and develop the most suitable Thai Basic Life Support training.

Mr. Natthaphat Siri-Angkul
Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University
Mr. Natthaphat Siri-Angkul is a sixth-year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University. He is interested in iron-overload cardiomyopathy, which is the leading cause of mortality among patients with thalassemia. Thalassemia is the most common monogenic disorder; nevertheless, current researches concerning its complications are still insufficient and effective treatments are still lacking. These limitations necessitate further studies of alterations in intracellular calcium signaling, utilizing molecular biological techniques at the levels of subcellular microdomains, to elucidate the pathophysiologic mechanisms of iron-overload cardiomyopathy. These insights will lead to extensive clinical applications for the benefit of thalassemia patients worldwide.

Mr. Thanakit Pongpitakmetha
Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University
Mr. Thanakit Pongpitakmetha is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. His goal is to improve management and quality of life in stroke (cerebrovascular disease) patients especially in screening and diagnosis of poststroke dementia by cognitive assessment tools. Cerebrovascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality, long-term extensive morbidity, and disability adjusted life years lost in the world and Thailand. Unfortunately aging society including Thailand significantly worsens burden of stoke and its consequence. Almost all of stroke victims present with weakness or immobility; however, some of victims developed impairment of cognitive function or dementia after the onset of stroke leading them to be a long-term burden to themselves, their families, and public health system. According to World Stroke Day Proclamation 2015, World Stroke Organization raised the public awareness about an importance of vascular component involving all major dementias which can be potentially treatable. Screening or early diagnosis play an important role in early treatment in this population leading to optimized their conditions. Hopefully the research in cognitive assessment tools for diagnosis of post stroke dementia.

Mr. Boonyakiat Thammasate
Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University
Mr. Boonyakiat Thammasate is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. He is interested in the field of Molecular genetics to study the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, one of the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and search for new biomarkers. Until now, preeclampsia is a common complication in pregnancy especially in pregnant who is previously healthy and cause of preeclampsia remains unclear, so it is very challenge to predict who will be suffered from preeclampsia. Using molecular genetic technology to apply in preeclampsia will provide another aspect to study the pathogenesis and biomarkers. Therefore, his project is to compare the micro RNA (miRNA) from preeclampsia pregnant’s blood samples with healthy pregnant to identify which micro RNA plays an important role in preeclampsia. Furthermore, the micro RNA may be served as novel biomarkers to predict which pregnancy will develop the disease that will lead to early detect and improve time-to-receive treatment to prevent complication of preeclampsia and improve qualities of life for children born from preeclampsia mothers.

Mr. Win Kulvichit
Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University
Mr. Win Kulvichit is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. His proposed research title is “Novel biomarkers in urinary exosomes for prediction of renal recovery in acute kidney injury”. Acute kidney injury is prevalent worldwide and commonly encountered in patients with critical illnesses. Moreover, acute kidney injury is strongly associated with serious complications, for example, refractory fluid overload, severe electrolyte imbalance, uremia and chronic kidney disease which in turn will greatly decrease the patients’ quality of life. Prediction of renal recovery could stratify each patient’s risk and guide appropriate treatment for individual patient. However, predicting renal recovery is not an easy task due to the complexity of the disease. Therefore, combining molecular biology approach with systems biology approach might be the key to successful exploration of novel biomarkers for renal recovery prediction. This study mainly focuses on discovery of biomarkers from urinary exosomes. Exosomes are nanosized vesicles produced and secreted from every cell for intercellular communication. The success of this project will be a step forward to personalized care for patients with acute kidney injury in the future.
