Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program Scholar 2015

Miss Praelada Wongsirimeteekul

Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University

Miss Praelada Wongsirimeteekul is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University.  She is interested in the field of medical education particularly in the Simulated Patient Training Program in order to improving clinical competence among Thai medical students. As is today’s norm, learning with real patients has its challenges and limitations. One such challenging mission facing tertiary care medical centers as medical schools is to adequately and appropriately train medical students in clinical skills competence.  This challenge results from a current trend of reduction in number of patients and that those patients are presenting with more complicated illnesses which are not appropriate for educational purposes. In addition, patient and medical staff safety issues have been an importantly global concern. Both patient and medical student’s risk would be decreased by well-practice before exposing real patients. Indeed, simulated patients (SPs) are required for a solution of these problems. Nowadays, SPs have been used in several medical schools in Thailand. Therefore, she has an intention to develop Thai Simulated patients Training Program or Thai-SPTP to international standard which is cost-effective and positively applicable to high quality medical education program for medical students in 21st century. This results in providing well-trained professional physicians serving our community and being leaders in the further advance of Thai and international health care system.

Mr. Poompong Sripa

Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University

Mr. Poompong Sripa, a sixth year medical student from Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. He is interested in a patient-centred care in order to improve Thai health care services. Currently, the patient-centred approach is not widely known and applied to Thai patients since our health care system and our medical practices are still based on a traditionally disease-focused approach without other factors such as patients’ preferences, feelings, psychosocial factors and illnesses. As a consequence, patients not only have an ineffective or inadequate treatment for their illness, but also lack of appropriate health promotion and prevention. Nowadays, Thailand is facing a lot of health problems and the two highlighted problems are about chronic non-communicable diseases and aging society. Recently, Thailand has rapid rise in numbers of older people. Moreover, a prevalence of patients with chronic non-communicable disease also sharply rises. Finally, Thai government will have to spend a huge budget on those problems. For these reasons, a patient-centred care study will become a good strategy to improve a holistic care and the Thai health system in the future.

Mr. Poompong Sripa has received many honors and awards as followings:

Mr. Phuwanat Sakornsakolpat

Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University

Mr. Phuwanat Sakornsakolpat is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University.  He is interested in the field of Systems Biology to study chronic diseases by using chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as a prototype. Chronic diseases are still the world’s leading causes of death. While the effective specific treatment of some chronic diseases such as COPD has not been available yet, most of current treatments can only relieve the symptoms but not to slow the progression of diseases. Major challenge in developing a specific therapy is its complexity. Therefore, a distinct approach to deal with such problems is required. Systems Biology is a new approach for studying the disease in a whole by integrating genomic, molecular and clinical data together to generate a model that can sense and predict the consequences of complex interactions. Combining quantitative molecular techniques and computational science on systems basis can help the development of better understanding of the disease, new drug targets and several disease predictors that will lead to the discovery of new therapeutic options and more precise treatment for each patient or Precision Medicine in the future.

Mr. Phuwanat Sakornsakolpat has received many honors and awards as follows:

Mr. Seelwan Sathitratanacheewin

Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University

Mr. Seelwan Sathitratanacheewin is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. His goal is to improve quality of living at the end-of-life in patients with non-malignant chronic disease by developing nonverbal symptom assessment tool and integrating advance care plan into chronic care model. In past decades, the landscape in health has shifted dramatically with emerging of chronic non-communicable diseases as leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the population. According to this paradigm, the concept of care which is primarily focused on the quality of life is strongly gaining popularity and presently one of the essential public health issues around the world. Improving the quality of life in health, symptoms management is the critical part of all. To potently relieve symptoms, the first is to assess it as many subjective measures of symptom have been developed for years. Routine subjective measures are of practical significance with patients who are verbal while there is increasing substantial number of patients who have compromised in verbally communication. So, an accurate self-report of the presence or intensity of symptom may not possible consequencing in inability to deliver highly effective symptomatic treatment in this population. Thus, nonverbal symptom assessment tool based on objective parameters is needed to develop to be used in such nonverbal patients.

Mr. Seelwan Sathitratanacheewin has received many honors and awards as follows:

2014 – Poster Presentation: “Assessment of Large HIV-Prevention Program Impact on Publication and Social Media: A Case of Avahan” at PRESDA Foundation: Asia Healthcare Without Border, Hiroshima , Japan

Mr. Soravis Osataphan

Faculty of Medicine, Srinakharinwirot University

Mr. Soravis Osataphan is a sixth year medical student at Srinakharinwirot University. His proposed research title is “Modulating hyperglycemic memory using epigenetic: Future Direction of Diabetic Vasculopathy Research”. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic deliberating disease that has no known cure. It has been estimated that there are 340 million people suffering from T2DM worldwide and up to 9.6% of Thais suffering from this disease. The Ministry of Public Health has declared T2DM as one of the five most important non-communicable diseases in Thailand. Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus will lead to microvascular complications such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy. These complications can cause blindness, end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis and diabetic foot. Metabolic memory is a new concept in the pathogenesis of diabetic vasculopathy. It was proposed that a period of high blood glucose would cause epigenetic changes in blood vessel and permanently trigger a constant production of oxidative stress and free radicals. This will lead to progressive inflammation of the blood vessel causing progression of microvascular complication even when the blood glucose has normalised. Mr. Osataphan is interested in exploring the epigenetic aspect of metabolic memory in order to elucidate new treatments for diabetic microvascular complications which could potentially improve the care of diabetes patients in Thailand in the future.

Mr. Soravis Osataphan has received many honors and awards as follows:
