The result of the Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program scholarship recipients 2011

Today (5 August 2011) at 13:30 hrs. Clin Prof Supat Vanichakarn, Secretary General of Prince Mahidol Award Foundation under Royal Patronage; Mr Thanee Thongpakdee, Director of Press Division, Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Prof Vicharn Panich, Chairman of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program Steering Committee; Assoc Prof Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Chairman of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program Working Committee; and Prof Sompop Limpongsanurak, Chairman of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program Selection Committee, together issue a press release on the names of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program Scholars for 2011 at the Hall in front of Prince Mahidol Aduldej Room, 4th floor of Siriraj Medical Library, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University.

The names of five Scholars of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program are as follows:
1. Mr Kritsaporn Sujjavorakul
2. Miss Jidapa Wongcharoenwatana
3. Mr Thapat Wannarong
4. Mr Sikarin Upala
5. Mr Sekh Thanprasertsuk

Thirteen applicants from 6 institutes were nominated for Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program in 2011. Only 13 successful applicants meet the criteria of Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program. The Selection Committee selected the Scholars and presented to the Board of Trustee which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a President. The final decision had been made on 10 June 2011.

     Prince Mahidol Award Youth Program has been established on 20 November 2008 according to the 2nd/ 2008 consensus of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation Committee. The program aims to inspire and facilitate Thai youths studied in the health fields to pursue their dedicated life for the benefit of mankind following the footsteps of HRH Prince Mahidol of Songkla.
     The steering committee, the working committee, and the selection committee are responsible to select the applicants who meet the criteria of the program, and present their names to the Board of Trustee which HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is a President, for a final decision.
     The successful applicants will obtain a scholarship for performing research, professional training or community development abroad or in the country with full support for 12-month overseas placement. The period of overseas placement of the Scholars will be considered as a part of their three-year working period for the government of Thailand.

Mr Kritsaporn Sujjavorakul
Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University

Mr Kritsaporn Sujjavorakul is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. He is interested in performing a research on “Pediatric Emergency Medicine Development Program in Thailand”. As ‘children are not small adults’, health services for these patients require the services of a specialists. The emergency medicine system in Thailand evolves in a sequence; however, the emergency medical services in pediatrics still majority use the service with emergency medical services in adults. According to the reasons above, it make the development of pediatric emergency medicine very important. This development will be able to raise the standard of health services for children and reduce the losses, which can befall the future of the nation.

     Mr Kritsaporn Sujjavorakul has received many honors and awards as follows:

    2009 Research assistant – to Assistant Professor Dr. Nipan Israsena collaborated on “Isolation of cancer stem cells from adult glioblastoma multiforme using Musashi reporter construct” in April 2009
     2008 Obtained 1st rank of Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University–King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital 99.52 percentile (2nd best) in Thai National Medical License Examination 2008 step 1 from Center for Medical Competency Assessment and Accreditation
2008 Participation in the 6th Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz (Professor A. Raman Challenge Trophy) held at University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday, 23rd August 2008

Miss Jidapa Wongcharoenwatana
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University

Miss Jidapa Wongcharoenwatana is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. She is interested in performing a research on “The Mechanical Axis Evaluation for the Management of Osteoarthritis of the Knee” due to the fact that there’re great numbers of patients suffering from osteoarthritis, it has been and still increasing related to the increasing numbers of elderly. It also develops at an earlier age because of overuse or misuse of the knee joint. Knee pain is the major problem of osteoarthritis patients that affects not only their daily life but it also worsen their quality of life and causes depression. Moreover, it’s a burden to their caregiver because of the treatment expenditure and close observation. Her project “The Mechanical Axis Evaluation for the Management of Osteoarthritis of the Knee” can help evaluate and early detection of the OA knee. Therefore, proper interventions and prevention or slow down the progression of the arthritis in the patients can be obtained.

     Miss Jidapa Wongcharoenwatana has received a number of honors and awards as follows:

Mr Thapat Wannarong
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University

Mr Thapat Wannarong is a sixth year medical student from the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. He is interested in performing a research on “The Evaluation of Stroke Awareness and Access to Stroke Care of the Thai people.” The aim of this project is to study the general knowledge of Thai people regarding the signs and symptoms of stroke, including risk factors associated with pre-hospital delays of acute stroke patients.

     Mr Thapat Wannarong has received many honors and awards as follows:
     2010     Vice President of External Affairs of Siriraj Medical Students Union, Siriraj Medical School
     2010     Chief organizer of the academic competition in medical science, Siriraj Medical School
2009     Director of a community research, “The Results and Complications of Pregnancy of Adolescents versus Adults at Bangsapan, Prachuapkhirikhan.”

students in basic medical sciences examination for medical competency and accreditation, Step 1 (percentile 99.92).
    2008     The Member (Fifth Class) of the Most Admirable Order of the Direkgunabhorn, the   Royal Decorations from His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej
2007     Director of a community project, “Tantawan San Rak Project” at Tantawan orphanage.
2006     Gold medalist (8th rank of the world) in the 17th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) at Cordoba, Argentina.
2006   Recipient of the best Thai youth award in mathematics, science, computer and technology from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.
    2003    Recipient of the best Thai youth award from the Office of the National Identity Board

In addition, Mr Thapat Wannarong has achieved outstanding academic records. His achievements include medal awards for having maintained the first rank in cumulative grades every consecutive year of studying at Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital. He has also received medal awards for attaining the first rank in many subjects such as anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, pathology, and clinical pathology.

Mr Sekh Thanprasertsuk
Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University

Mr Sekh Thanprasertsuk is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. He is interested in performing a research on “Management in the Golden Period of Acute Ischemic Stroke”.

Nowadays, ischemic stroke is a condition that gives a large amount of burdens in Thailand, and even worldwide. Acute stroke management is very important as, if manage properly, can reduce severity of the condition, and it will also have an effect on the future life of the stroke patient. In Thailand, knowledge regarding acute stroke management is not much different from developed countries, but the practice is highly different, so the outcome of stroke patient in Thailand after the acute period is relatively poorer.

     The most important aim of this project is to push forward for the improvement of acute stroke management system in Thailand, by experiencing the effective system in developed countries, and then appropriately apply for Thailand. Although this project is focusing on management in the acute period, the concept of comprehensive and continuum of care (primary prevention, acute/emergency management, secondary prevention, and rehabilitation) is also important for caring the patient; therefore, this comprehensive and continuum of care service concept is also included in the objectives of this project.
     Mr Sekh Thanprasertsuk has received many honors and awards as follows:
     2010        Vice chairperson of The Student Union of the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University (SMCU).
     2010       Responsible person on the project to prevent H1N1 influenza for the public, organized by SMCU at     Siam Square, Bangkok.
     2010         Responsible person on the campaign project for blood donation to celebrate His Majesty’s birthday.
     2008         Participated in the 6th Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz at University of Malaya, Malaysia.
     2007 – 2008     Participated as a volunteer in tution camp for high school student at Sakolnakorn, Bangkok and     Kalasint provinces (3 times).
     2007 – 2008     Highest score in Basic Neurological Science (2nd year, 2007), Metabolism and Nutrition (2nd year,     2007), Basic Immunology (3rd year, 2008), Clinical Hematology (3rd year, 2008).
     2004       Honorable Mention Award in High School Chemical Science Competition for HRH Princess     Chulabhorn Walailak’s Plaque at Kasetsart University, Bangkok.
2003 – 2005       Excellent performance in Mathematics, Social Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (high school).

Mr Sikarin Upala
Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University

Mr Sikarin Upala is a sixth year medical student at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. He is interested in performing a research on “Endothelial Progenitor Cells to Prevent Vascular Complication in Diabetic Patients”. The inspiration of seeing a large number of patients coming to see the doctor with diabetes mellitus and its complications in various organs makes him realize the importance of using new modality such as stem cell therapy. If this technique is proven to be effective in diabetic patients, a lot of lives and major vital organs can be saved from this disease.

     Mr Sikarin Upala has received many honors and awards as follows:

     2010     Received the award for being the best student in Surgery.
     2010     Research in “Elevation of liver enzymes in Thai population with the metabolic syndrome”
